Pan-Canadian CSL Symposium - Friday 9 October, 2009

Held in conjunction with the Ninth Annual International Research Conference on Service-Learning and Community Engagement, this was the third biennial national symposium on community service-learning in Canada, organized by the Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning and sponsored by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and the Faculty of Public Affairs at Carleton University.

While focussing on key learnings and issues of community service-learning from the Canadian experience and perspective, the symposium was also open to IRCSLCE delegates as a pre-conference workshop.  The Symposium featured presentations and discussions on key learnings from the development and implementation of CSL in Canadian universities and colleges, how theories of change have adapted and evolved over time, how community service-learning can contribute to the solution of community issues in difficult economic times, and an exploration of policy change at the federal, provincial, and institutional levels that is needed to fund and support this work.  A special noon hour panel discussion featured international experts in service-learning and community-engagement providing their perspective on the conference theme:  Research for What?  Making Inquiry Matter which was also “broadcast” live by audio conference call as one of our TeleLearning Seminars.

Envisioning Service Learning in Atlantic Canada - Friday 12 June, 2009

A roundtable meeting of representatives of Atlantic Canadian institutions interested in community service learning took place on June 12, 2009 at the Waterfront Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College. This is the first time that such a meeting was held in the region, and discussion was focused on addressing two key questions: With respect to CSL implementation, where are we now? here would we like to be? The meeting was co-facilitated by Gina Sampson and Marla Gaudet of St Francis Xavier University Service Learning program and Nancy O'Regan of the Service Learning Implementation Team of the Nova Scotia Community College.  Representatives 10 Atlantic universities, the Nova Scotia Community College, Provincial Departments of Education, and the
community contributed to the discussion. The meeting demonstrated that momentum around CSL is building in the region, as a number of institutions are making administrative commitments to support CSL opportunities for students.  Participants agreed to continue to meet at least one a year to share information and progress.
